Laos

Destination excerpt…
Laos, a Southeast Asian gem, is known for its serene landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and laid-back charm. Landlocked and bordered by Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, and Myanmar, Laos is a paradise for nature and culture lovers alike. Its lush mountains, dense forests, and winding rivers, including the mighty Mekong, make it ideal for eco-tourism and adventurous travelers. The ancient city of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a glimpse into the country’s spiritual soul, with its golden Buddhist temples, traditional wooden houses, and French colonial architecture. Visitors can witness the morning alms-giving ritual, where monks collect food offerings from locals, a sacred tradition symbolizing Laos’ deep Buddhist roots. The Plain of Jars, mysterious stone relics scattered across the Xiangkhoang Plateau, and the Four Thousand Islands (Si Phan Don) in the south, add to Laos’ allure, making it a destination of captivating beauty and tranquility.

Preparing for Laos

Laos is becoming more popular and easy to travel though it still takes a little planning and often patience get around. Compares to 10 years back the transformation is amazing. I would recommend paying attention to the following
Weather & Seasons

Whilst a tropical country for the most part there are times of the year (November to February) and places where the nighttime temperature can get down below 10c. Plan ahead and be prepared.

Visa & Entry

Most visitors except (ASEAN and a few nominated countries) will need a visa or get visa on arrival. My recommendation to speed arrival is apply in advance and this will saving considerable time queuing to pay the visa fee.

Cash & Cards

Cash is still king in Laos. Recommended to carry mostly local (KIP) and also some USD in particular for tours. Credit cards are becoming more widely accepted and im sure with 2-3 years contactless payments will be everywhere.

Local Transport

This will vary on your location. Larger cities like Vientiane and Luang Prabang have taxi , tuktuk and other local transport options. In Vientiane there is ride sharing service however needs a local app. Have cash and be prepared to negotiate a little
